Why You Need a Chemical-Free Mattress

The world is becoming more aware of how our environment, both outside and in our own homes, affects us. Daily, we’re exposed to various chemicals, both in the air and in materials we come in contact with. But while you can’t control everything you touch and breathe in, you can control where you sleep. That’s why you need a chemical-free mattress like the ones made and sold at Gardner Mattress.

Safer to Sleep On

You’re spending 6-8 hours sleeping on your mattress, so it’s important that it’s as safe and non-toxic as possible. It’s better for your short- and long-term health to avoid prolonged exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which can be found in thousands of household products, including mattresses. VOCs negatively affect indoor air quality. Sleeping directly on top of a mattress that emits these chemicals can be bad for your health.

You might worry about what the absence of these chemicals might mean, however. After all, many mattress manufacturers found that the easiest way to make their mattresses fire-retardant was to use chemically-treated materials. This is meant to accommodate federal guidelines put in place in 2007 that required mattresses to be able to withstand 30 minutes of exposure to an open flame to protect sleepers from lit cigarettes or candles.

However, mattresses made with organic materials such as organic New Zealand wool are naturally fire-resistant. But putting the extra effort into using naturally fire-retardant materials, there’s no need for harsh, toxic chemical treatments. This means you’re breathing in safe air on an equally-safe mattress.

Fewer Allergens

Chemicals can be exceptionally harsh on those who suffer from allergies or have asthma. In fact, there have been studies on how chemical exposure can trigger asthma. According to a report by toxicology.org, “You can actually develop an allergy to a chemical when your immune system recognizes it specifically as a foreign substance.”

Therefore, if you suffer from allergies or asthma, you’re better off going with a mattress made with hypoallergenic materials. Organic wool, long strand horsehair, and flax all create inhospitable environments for dust mites, bacteria, and fungi without the need for chemicals. This means you’ll be able to sleep and breathe comfortably, free from various allergens.

Environmentally Friendly

Buying a chemical-free mattress isn’t just good for you; it’s good for the planet. No matter how good your mattress is, it has a finite lifespan. This means it will eventually have to be thrown out. When these mattresses are left out to biodegrade, the chemicals trapped in the materials are released into the air, ground, and water. This negatively affects the environment, causing long-term environmental damage, especially when it’s done on a mass scale.

Going with a chemical-free mattress is one of the best things you can do for your body and the planet without sacrificing quality or comfort.
