Tips to Get Better Sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep is important to maintaining your health and quality of life. However, much of that comes down to your bedtime routine and the quality of your mattress. Here are a few tips to ensure your mattress is at optimal comfort levels and that you get the best sleep possible.
Only Use Your Bed for Sleeping
Here’s a fun psychology fact – we have an easier time falling asleep when we mainly associate our bed with sleep. Many people love to lay in bed and read, watch TV, eat, and other non-sleeping activities. This, unfortunately, results in them having a harder time falling asleep in their bed because the brain associates it with waking activities. That’s why you should minimize the amount of time you spend in bed not sleeping. This includes getting up and doing something else if you can’t fall asleep.
On top of that, the more time you spend in bed, the more wear and tear you’re putting on your mattress. To get the most out of a good mattress’ 7-10 year lifespan, it’s better to only use it for the 7-8 hours of sleep you should be getting each night. This way the bed stays comfortable and provides the proper support for your body for longer.
Flip or Rotate Your Mattress
When you’ve slept on a mattress for a long while, it starts to lose some of its firmness. It can even develop sagging spots or indents where your body tends to rest. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to get a new comfortable spot on your mattress and let the old one recover – flip or rotate your mattress. This way you will get to sleep on what was an untouched spot that is still firm. Meanwhile, the old spot will be unused for a long period of time, so the material has time to decompress and expand.
Make Sure Your Mattress is Big Enough
If you share a bed with someone, it’s easy for your sleep to be disturbed if the bed is too small. It can be for a variety of reasons. If your partner tosses and turns or gets up a lot in the middle of the night, a small mattress that doesn’t provide enough motion transfer support could jostle you awake. Or if your partner gives off too much body heat, you could wake up in the middle of the night hot and sweaty because there isn’t enough space between you.
Even if you sleep alone, it’s important to ensure your mattress size suits your needs. Taller people often need a larger bed to accommodate their height. So if you plan on getting a single bed, your height could be the difference between needing a Twin or Twin XL mattress.
Comfort is vital to getting a good night’s sleep, which is why you should take the proper steps to keep your mattress in top condition. Treat it well and use mindful sleeping practices and you’ll wake up feeling healthy and refreshed each morning.
