Are Eco-Friendly Mattresses Worth It?

Why you should buy an eco-friendly mattress from Gardner Mattress

With sustainability and eco-friendliness being hot topics, many are looking for ways to make their lives a little greener. This can include making greener buying choices, including furniture. But you might be wondering; is an eco-friendly mattress worth it? Is this a purchase you should be making a sustainable switch for?

The answer is yes, and here are the reasons why eco-friendly mattresses are worthwhile.

Made of Organic and Recycled Materials

You may think that it’s hard to find an eco-friendly mattress because of the materials. However, organic and recycled materials are found in many of Gardner Mattress’ handcrafted mattresses. We take care to ensure that our mattresses have a minimal environmental impact by using sustainable, natural materials. In particular, the Natural Sleep Collection uses organic New Zealand wool, flax, horsehair, talalay latex, and cotton batting to create comfortable, supportive mattresses that are eco-friendly to boot. There’s even a vegan mattress for those who truly want to live a sustainable lifestyle.

Even when materials aren’t organic, we still take care to minimize waste. Several mattresses use densified insulator pads, which are made of recycled materials. These pads can be found in both the Natural Sleep and Traditional Collections, so we’re devoted to encouraging sustainability in some fashion across all of our products.

Affordable and Long-Lasting

While sustainability is a great goal, some people worry about the cost. Many wonder if an eco-friendly mattress will be too expensive and might seek out cheaper alternatives. However, sustainable, organic mattresses are actually quite affordable. An organic mattress might have a slightly higher upfront cost, but once you factor in how long the mattress will last, you’ll find it’s cheaper than you think!

Typically, mattresses have a lifespan of 7-10 years, but organic mattresses last even longer, especially if they’re flippable mattresses like the ones we make. So if you buy a mattress that’s $1000 that lasts for more than 10 years, you’re really paying less than $100 per year. And while these mattresses last longer as a product, they biodegrade faster once you’re done with them. Organic materials biodegrade much more quickly than synthetic ones, so they spend less time in landfills.

More Ethical

You also need to consider why the cost is higher upfront. It costs more to farm organic materials like cotton and wool, and those farmers deserve to be paid fairly for their products. It’s more ethical to pay a little extra for an organic mattress where the farmers and manufacturers are paid fairly for their labor than to buy a cheap, mass-produced mattress made of wasteful materials where the CEO will pocket most of the money.

Eco-friendly mattresses are absolutely worthwhile due to their great materials, affordability, and ethical implications. The next time you go mattress shopping, come to Gardner Mattress to get a sustainable, eco-friendly mattress you’ll love.
