When is the Best Time to Buy a New Mattress?

Decide when you should buy a new mattress

Sooner or later, everyone needs to get a new mattress. So you may be wondering as you plan out your year when is the best time to buy a new mattress. Is there any rhyme or reason to decide when to buy a new mattress? Is there a time of year when there might be good deals? YES and here are our suggestions for when to buy a new mattress.

The New Year

Start off the new year with a new mattress. If getting a better night’s sleep is part of your New Year’s resolution, a new, high-quality mattress could be what you need to achieve it. Be sure to test out your mattress beforehand to ensure it’s comfortable and supports you properly so you get the best sleep possible. Also, getting a new mattress at the beginning of the year makes it easier to keep track of how old it is in the future.

Spring Forward

The months of February through early May tend to be good mattress buying months if you’re looking for some end-of-year sales. Many mattress companies roll out new products during May and June, so you might find yourself getting a deal on an older mattress model as they make more room in the warehouse for new ones.

Holiday Weekends

Presidents’ Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Veterans Day are holiday weekends that mattress retailers use to promote extra holiday savings. Memorial Day weekend is one of the best times to buy a mattress since customers can also take advantage of ongoing spring mattress sales.

The post-Thanksgiving shopping weekend, including Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday are also popular mattress sales days. If you’re about to go mattress shopping and a holiday weekend is right around the corner, ask the retailer if there are any upcoming specials. You may be able to get more — and earlier — inside information from a locally owned mattress store since they are well-connected to the community.

When the Time is Right for You

Simply put, the best time to buy a new mattress is when you need a new one. There’s no quantifiable date for this, so the one person who can answer whether it’s time to replace your mattress is you. Do you sleep soundly at night, and awake refreshed and without pain or stiffness? Do you feel well-supported while sleeping? What if you toss and turn trying to get comfortable every night and wake up feeling sore and bruised? If your mattress is worn down and sagging and offers little to no support, it’s time to replace it — even if it’s only a few years old.

Holding out for a seasonal clearance may save you some big bucks on the overall mattress price tag, but it could cost you dearly in aches and pains, poor sleep, and spine issues due to lack of support in a sagging, worn-out mattress. You don’t want to be in the position of needing to replace your mattress now while waiting for a sale that may or may not come. How long are you willing to hold out for a discount, and what is it really costing you?

Not only does your general well-being take a hit from these problems, but it could result in spending more money on physical therapy, a chiropractor, or other doctor’s bills just to get back to a place of health. Many mattress manufacturers recommend replacing your mattress every 8 to 10 years, but that’s not a magic number. Extending (or shortening) the life of your mattress has more to do with how you take care of it, and not as much to do with a general rule of thumb. Flipping and rotating, regular wear and tear, letting children or pets jump or bounce on the bed, or even hauling a mattress in and out of a moving van are all factors that can affect how long your mattress lasts.

If you’re planning to replace your mattress this year, come to one of our showrooms to test out our handmade mattresses. You’ll find products with quality that match the price, knowledgeable staff who can answer your questions, and mattresses that are made locally in Salem, Massachusetts.
