New Year’s Mattress Resolutions
The new year has come, which means it’s time to get started with your New Year’s resolutions. This means you’re working towards developing better habits, changing an undesirable trait, or have a goal you want to achieve this calendar year. While for some people this might be exercise or eating better, for some, it’s developing better bedtime habits.
Your mattress is an integral part of getting a good night’s sleep, so here are a few New Year’s mattress resolutions to consider. More importantly, here are tips on how you can achieve these goals.
Resolution: Take Better Care of Your Mattress
Ask yourself this – do I take good care of my mattress? Perhaps your New Year’s resolution should include taking better care of your mattress. Thankfully, this is easier than you might expect. If you make a simple schedule and follow these tips, you’ll develop some good habits in no time.
Flip or Rotate Your Mattress Every Few Months
If you have one of our flippable mattresses, your mattress’ lifespan is potentially double that of ordinary mattresses. However, this only works if you remember to flip your mattress regularly. If you don’t have a flippable mattress, you should still rotate your mattress, as this also extends its lifespan.
Flipping or rotating your mattress is a habit that can be hard to get into, especially if your mattress is heavy, as you’ll likely need a second set of hands to flip it. However, it is a good habit to get into. Flipping and rotating your mattress allows the materials inside to decompress while you get a fresh spot to sleep on. It’s generally recommended that you flip or rotate your mattress about four times per year. So, try doing this once per season – winter, spring, summer, and fall.
Vacuum Your Mattress
Everyone knows to vacuum a rug, but how often do you think to vacuum your mattress? This is a cleaning habit you should get into to keep your mattress fresh. It can remove allergens that could be disrupting your sleep, like dead skin, dust, and dust mites. Vacuuming the mattress also can help remove lingering odors.
There is no real consensus about how often you should vacuum your mattress. However, doing it seasonally, perhaps at the same time that you flip your mattress, is a good way to get into the habit.
Use A Mattress Protector
A mattress protector is a great way to keep your mattress clean between seasons. It’s an extra layer of protection between the mattress and outside pollutants. This includes dust in the air, your sweat, and pet hair. It’s also a layer of protection from spills if you’re the type of person who likes to have breakfast in bed.
Resolution: Improve Your Sleep Habits
The new year is a great time to resolve to live healthier. Diet and exercise can do a lot, but where more people need to focus is sleep. Our sleep habits greatly affect our health, both physically and mentally. When you resolve to improve your sleep habits, you’ll find yourself living better and overall happier.
Get More Sleep
We use our mattresses between seven and eight hours every night. At least, that’s the ideal according to the CDC. But unfortunately, the average adult gets less than seven hours of sleep per night. That’s why you need to look at how much sleep you’re getting on a regular basis and adjust your sleep schedule accordingly.
Of course, being able to change your sleep habits is easier said than done. This is a New Year’s resolution you’ll need to work on slowly in order for it to be effective. Try going to bed just a little bit earlier every night until you’re getting enough sleep. This could take several months to become your new normal, but it will greatly benefit you in the long run.
Only Use Your Bed for Sleep
Speaking of adjusting your sleep schedule, another great tip to get your sleep resolution on track has to do with your bed itself. Namely, only use your bed for sleep. This is a psychological trick that will make falling asleep easier. When you only use your bed when you’re ready to fall asleep, your mind associates your bed only with sleep. This is also why, if you are having a hard time falling asleep, you should get up and only go back to bed when you’re feeling sleepy again.
This tip has the added benefit of extending your mattress’ lifespan, too, which will make it more comfortable for longer. Instead of adding extra hours of wear-and-tear to your mattress by laying on it while eating, reading, or talking on the phone, only use it for those 7 hours you spend sleeping.
Resolution: Invest in a New Mattress
This is a New Year’s resolution that doesn’t involve developing new habits, but is an important goal to set if your mattress is getting old and uncomfortable. If your mattress is comfortable, you’ll sleep better, and if it’s high-quality, it will last for longer and need less maintenance.
Shop In-Person
Buying a new mattress can be as easy as ordering one online, but it’s actually not ideal. To ensure you’re getting a mattress that lasts for ten years or more, you need to shop in-person. By visiting one of our showrooms, you’ll get to actually test your mattress and discuss your sleep needs and material preferences with the actual mattress crafters.
Choose a Mattress that Suits Your Sleep Position
The most important aspect of any mattress is finding one that suits your sleep position. Stomach sleepers, side sleepers, and back sleepers all need different types of support. This means that mattresses aren’t a one-size-fits-all situation, so it’s imperative that you choose carefully. When you find the mattress with the right level of firmness and support, you’ll sleep more soundly than you had ever dreamed.
This new year, resolve to sleep better, get a new mattress, and take care of your mattress. When you do, you’ll find yourself happier and healthier. Set sleep goals and start better sleeping habits in 2024.
