3 Sleep Disorders Your Mattress Could Help With
We’ve all heard about how important a good night’s sleep is, but not everyone can get one so easily. More than 50 million Americans suffer from some kind of sleep disorder. These often make it difficult for people to fall asleep, cause them to wake up frequently throughout the night, or just overall not get a particularly restful sleep. For some of these disorders, your mattress could provide relief. Here are three that could benefit from a better mattress.
Insomnia
When people think of sleep disorders, insomnia tends to be the first one that comes to mind. If you’re a person with insomnia, you typically have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting good quality sleep.
Insomnia can be caused by a number of factors. For example, short-term (acute) insomnia is often caused by periods of stress or changes to your schedule or environment. Meanwhile, long-term (chronic) insomnia could be linked to other medical or mental health issues, or could even be a side effect of a medication you’re taking.
As short-term insomnia can typically be a result of an environment that’s not conducive to sleep, getting a better mattress could be the key to relieving it. When you’re sleeping on a mattress that’s more supportive and comfortable, it’s easier to drift off and stay asleep. Chronic insomnia unfortunately likely won’t be cured so easily. However, if your mattress is old or uncomfortable, a new mattress that supports you better could lead to better-quality sleep when you do manage to catch a few winks.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea can be a pretty serious condition depending on the severity. It’s a sleep disorder where your breathing stops and restarts many times while you sleep. Your airways get blocked, which reduces or can even completely stop your airflow. This can prevent you from getting enough oxygen, which can be dangerous to your health.
Your mattress can be a big help with sleep apnea. By getting a mattress that is compliant with an adjustable base, you can sleep at an incline. This will prevent things like your tongue from falling back and obstructing your airflow, which is common with sleep apnea.
Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking is a sleep disorder where a person gets up and starts walking or doing other complex motions while still being asleep. About 7% of people sleepwalk at least once in their lifetime, though this is usually as a child and most people grow out of it. However, not everyone does, and it can be dangerous as sleepwalkers are prone to injury during these episodes.
While experts aren’t fully sure what causes sleepwalking, it’s commonly linked to sleep deprivation. That’s why, to prevent sleepwalking, it’s important to sleep on a mattress that encourages a deep, restful sleep. Consider what’s preventing you from sleeping well at night and find a mattress that addresses these needs. Get a mattress that has the appropriate level of firmness, temperature control, and comfortable materials. This can be a huge help in cutting down on sleepwalking episodes.
